Were You at the Rock? by Tony Nugent6/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Behavior like this doesn’t belong anywhere, least of all in the White House.”Īs for the Palin-Nugent-Kid Rock photos, they’re downright tame. “While the White House does not control the conduct of guests at receptions, we certainly expect that all attendees conduct themselves in a respectful manner,” wrote the White House in a statement. Our story and the photos went national after they were picked up by huge right-wing site the Drudge Report, and the White House was soon to respond to our story. In other words, Segal wanted to be invited back to the White House. ‘Be on your best behavior,’ my staff told me.’ I think they know me too well.” I’m not going to do something that could embarrass them or that could somehow damage a campaign that is so important. “I have friends who work in that building. “It’s not a gesture that I would use in the White House when representing our city and our community,” Segal told us of the middle finger photos when we asked him about them back then. ![]() Strauss shared some of the images on her public social media stream, and Philly Mag published them along with this story. Segal, who was a bit more aware of the hallowed ground on which he stood, made his point without getting vulgar. While they were strolling through the White House corridors, they decided to pose for photos with the portrait of Ronald Reagan, who was no friend to the gay community during his presidency.Īnd so, Hart and Strauss gave the Reagan portrait the finger. ![]()

The Dead Queens Club by Hannah Capin6/20/2023 ![]() When I was accepted to review it before release, I was even more excited, and couldn’t wait to get started. I’ve been especially into murder mystery novels lately, trying to find more YA ones as the genre keeps growing, so this book was an instant add to my tbr. The first quarter of 2019 seemed to be ripe for a lot of Henry VIII retellings, and this novel was one of a few that caught my eye. She’s the only one that’s managed to survive dating Henry so far, and she’s starting to wonder why… It’s got drama, romance, and strong female friendships, narrated by Annie “Cleves” Marck, Henry’s fourth girlfriend. The Dead Queens Club is a modern high school retelling of Henry VIII and his wives. While the copy was provided for free, all opinions are honest and my own. ![]() ![]() First off I would like to thank the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this ARC. ![]()

Brisbane by William Day6/20/2023 ![]() Today, each of the capitals has its own character and attractions, and their development plans will determine the shape of Australia's future. Many cities struggled through their early years, until the 19th century Gold Rush provided them with the funds to build magnificent civic buildings, as well as roads, bridges and railways. ![]() Having a reliable source of fresh water was a common requirement, which is why all of the cities are located beside a water supply of some sort. Others, such as Adelaide, refused to accept convicts and developed differently as a result. Some, like Sydney, depended on convicts for their early survival. There are still uncrowded beaches and areas of bushland not far from the city centre, and the beautiful islands of Moreton Bay have historic sites that will intrigue any visitor interested in Brisbane's past.Įach of Australia's eight capital cities has a unique history. Agriculture and industry across Greater Brisbane contribute to its economy, providing employment for thousands of people. Tourists visiting the remarkable natural wonders in the rest of Queensland use Brisbane as their starting point and base, but there is much more to Brisbane than just the city centre. Luckily, our glorious city is also blessed with a bevvie of brilliant bars in which to wet your whistle. ![]() Brisbane developed into a city famous for its sunshine and relaxed atmosphere. 6th Jul 2022 Eating and shopping your way around Brisbane’s best restaurants and boutiques can be thirsty work. Queensland was once a part of New South Wales, only separating from it in 1859. ![]()

I love my hair natasha tarpley6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() talked to Natasha Tarpley about how she inherited the writing gene, what kinds of stories are considered "mainstream," and how we can help change children’s literature for the better. In honor of its 20th year in print, "I Love My Hair!" has been reissued with new cover art and, of course, a promise to keep speaking to generations to come. ![]() ![]() A quick look at the book’s Amazon reviews - more than 400 nearly 5 stars - reveal just how lasting "I Love My Hair!"'s legacy is. Through the years it’s made its way into the hands of kids who then passed it down to their kids, each generation finding life-changing affirmation and confidence in its gorgeous depictions of Keyana's hair and the rituals around it. The book was first published in 1998, and it hasn’t left bookstore shelves since. ![]() That dearth of cultural representation inspired her to write "I Love My Hair!," a children’s picture book about a young girl named Keyana who finds out how special her hair is as her mother combs it. And, according to author Natasha Tarpley, even those were narrow in scope, focusing on trauma or historical narratives, and lacking imagination. Just 20 years ago, there was little in the way of stories for and about black kids. It's a fairly recent phenomenon that publishers are seeking more diverse stories to quench the public's thirst for books that actually reflect all of our lived experiences. ![]()

The witching hour audio book6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() First and foremost, the method Rice chose to tell her tale–with Louis’ first-person confession to a skeptical boy–transformed the vampire from a hideous predator into a highly sympathetic, seductive, and all-too-human figure. ![]() But a summary of this story bypasses the central attractions of the novel. The two prey on innocents, give their “dark gift” to a young girl, and seek out others of their kind (notably the ancient vampire Armand) in Paris. At his emotional nadir, he is confronted by Lestat, a charismatic and powerful vampire who chooses Louis to be his fledgling. The story is ostensibly a simple one: having suffered a tremendous personal loss, an 18th-century Louisiana plantation owner named Louis Pointe du Lac descends into an alcoholic stupor. In the now-classic novel Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice refreshed the archetypal vampire myth for a late-20th-century audience. ![]()

Amanda and her alligator6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Illustrative style is slightly more Knuffle than Elephant and Piggie, with wide crayony lines providing texture, movement indications, and outline, and succulent jelly-bean hues in watercolor filling in the lines the abundant white space confers a generous, roomy feel that enhances the focus on the main players (especially the criminally adorable alligator) and adds to the ease of the reading experience. The text reads easily both alone and aloud, with short sentences, much of it dialogue or Alligator’s thoughts, appearing in reassuringly large print and in polite subordination, sizewise, to full-size picture-book pages. Willems tackles such topics in his own inimitable style, with touches of absurdity contrasting with the comfortably playful relationship between girl and ’gator (“Amanda was reading her new library book You Can Make It Yourself: Jet Packs!when she noticed her alligator chewing on her head”). ![]() The episodes are compact, each between four and twelve pages long including an opening chapter-title spread, and they treat matters ranging from the joys of reading to the value of friendship to the pleasures of making a new friend. The ongoing (and child-pleasing) theme is surprise, with story titles such as “A Surprising Surprise,” “A Surprising Value,” and “A Surprising Discovery” (between stories two and three is a short bonus story called “An Extra Surprise”). Six-well, six and one-half-very short stories document the relationship of young Amanda and her beloved toy alligator. ![]()

Laurent binet goodreads6/20/2023 ![]() The whole: HHhH (affiliate links: Amazon, B&N, Book Depository) is the dearest book about Nazi officers that ever I have read, though admittedly it did not face much competition. ![]() The end (not spoilers, just history): Some brave people died, and you wish they had not. The beginning: The narrator’s father tells him a story about a Czech and a Slovak who killed Himmler’s right-hand man, Reinhard Heydrich. But it looks disingenuous and denies the emotional oomf the book has. The reason for that is you can’t put “dear sweet book” into the same sentence with “assassination of a Nazi spymaster”. I also did not expect that in the eventuality of my loving it, I would have any difficulty in describing to other people why I loved it so much. And also because I picked HHhH to win the Tournament of Books (it did not), and I felt an obligation to it for that reason. I read HHhH because I got a copy for free from a coworker and finished my other book on the subway. Just understand that it is a list of two things I am unfond of. Never mind about the grammar of that list. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am going to highly recommend it in spite of: It is awfully good, and I am going to recommend it to you very highly. ![]()

Spider man spider shadow 16/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The symbiotes give chase, leaving Peter alone in Mr. Johnny Storm, a Shipper til the end, grabs MJ and flies her to safety. Marvel it doesn’t help your editorial position to have the crazed villain champion it in story, just FYI. The symbiotes want him to be marketable in all demographics, and being in a committed relationship really limits toy sales. The symbiotes want to kill her as they believe she holds Peter back from being the best Spider-Man he can be. Venom-Reed is convinced that Peter rejected him, due to his love for MJ. Venom-Reed had venomized a legion of Avengers to use against him. Sue Richards, Johnny Storm and MJ are there to help…but tragedy strikes! The final showdown between Peter and the Symbiote. This is the final issue of Spider’s Shadow, Marvel’s first mini series in the new line of What If… and what better day then this to end on with the new Disney+ show streaming now. ![]() I think…probably just a high pollen count today. ![]()
