A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies6/25/2023 Great writing and witty banter round this one out to be engaging and endearing. With an intelligent protagonist, and a mystery element at least to the first part of the book, the reader will be lured in despite the book's faults. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.Ī Beautiful Dark is the first book in a captivating trilogy by debut author Jocelyn Davies.įantastic in concept, though slow in execution, A Beautiful Dark pitches a very interesting twist on angels. In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move-only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Their sudden appearance sends Skye’s life into a tailspin. Complete opposites-like fire and ice-Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. SUMMARY: On the night of Skye’s seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers.

Through the Hourglass by Sacchi Green6/25/2023 You are so far away from the people you are reading about that it feels like they were hanging out down the street from you. Encase you don’t know what I mean by psychic distance… have you ever read a book where you felt like you were right in the characters head, seeing and feeling what they are going through? That is the closest psychic distance you can get to a character. On top of that the psychic distance to the main characters were so far away. They were just a bunch of cardboard cut-outs walking around, that I couldn’t care about. The characters, the story, nothing had any dimension. That is the best way to describe what this book felt like. The premise left things open for lots of possible action and excitement. There was nothing wrong with the big picture storyline. After one woman is cut with an artifact, she is able to move things with her mind. This story is about two women, who are a couple, in the military. All four books are standalone so you can read any you choose and in any order. This is the fourth and sorry to say worse book in The Superheroine Collection. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how much you love them as this book falls flat anyway. We all have different tastes and I happen to love superheroes. Even knowing that, I still approached this book with hope that it would work for me. After reading the other reviews my expectations for this book were tempered.

That said, the Disney version may resemble Andersen’s original story, but the alterations make them significantly disparate. She has a boundless curiosity regarding the unknown human world, and does what she can to experience being on land. As with Disney’s iteration of the classic tale, Ariel, who is only referred to by her titular name, wants nothing more than to explore the shore up above. The story was a part of a collection called Fairy Tales Told for Children. But even then, the 2023 version, as with the 1989 animation, deviates from Andersen’s source material quite heavily.Īndersen’s The Little Mermaid was first published in 1837. Directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey in the title role, the live-action The Little Mermaid reimagines the animated classic while still drawing from the original story. Disney’s The Little Mermaidis influenced by Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale, but there are stark differences between the two.
